Have you heard of Microblading?

Tired of putting your eyebrows on every morning or using the tweezers so much that the brow grow-back never happened? Were you that 90’s teen that kept plucking your brows as thin as you could get them? Well, there’s now a new trend to have perfect brows everyday with minimal work. It’s called microblading. What is microblading you say? I’ll discuss further about what it is and what you should consider before obtaining your new beautiful brows.  

Microblading is sometimes called a feather touch because of the fine, tiny needles that are used to add the semi-permanent hair-like strokes to the skin. This technique is not as new as most people think. This trend started in Asia about 25 years ago and didn’t reach the U.S and Europe until 2015. It’s like getting a tattoo brow but it’s ideal for creating that full and realistic look. The needles are not ingrained deep into your skin like the normal brow tattoo, so they look better and in addition look natural. The hand-held blade creates fine slices in the skin and deposits pigments into the upper region of the dermis layer. This makes the fine lines only last about 2 years until they fade away. That’s still better than applying your brows every day and less painful than getting it tattooed on.  

Things to consider before getting your microblading 

This new technique is beneficial to those with natural brows or if you use a brow pencil. If you have oily skin, or old permanent makeup tattoo on your brows, it is not recommended as it will not retain the pigment as well. Unfortunately, the pigment will fade quicker if you have oily skin compared to dry or normal skin. You still can get microblading for your brows, just keep in mind it won’t last as long as other skin types. You should also not have this done if you are pregnant or nursing. There is a mild anesthetic used as well as the application of pigment into the skin.  

After your session with your aesthetician pay close attention to the brow area to see if it does become puffy or raised. Here are some signs to look for if you have an infection: 

• Yellow-tinged discharge 
• Excessive redness 
• Area continues to scab after two weeks 
• Leaks pus 

These are all signs of an infection and you should immediately go to the doctor. An infection in the eyebrow is especially concerning if it reaches your bloodstream, as it is close to the eyes and brain. Your doctor will give you treatment with antibiotics to help with the infection. The most important thing you should look out for is to make sure your aesthetician has a license. Some states do not require them. It’s always best to go to a professional aesthetician clinic to get this procedure done.  

How to take care of your brows after microblading 

After you have received your new brows you must follow your instructions carefully, otherwise you’ll be throwing your money out the door. The first couple of days you’ll want to dry heal, which means not putting on creams or ointments on your brows, just let them dry out. During the healing process your brows will scab and at this time you’ll use a cream until the scabs have completely fallen off. Once the healing is complete your brows will look darker and slightly red, but that will eventually fade as well. The total amount of days it takes to completely heal is 10 to 14 days. Avoid excessive sweating if you’re working out at the gym or going swimming during your healing process. Another recommendation is to wear sunscreen on your face to help prevent the ink from fading due to the UV rays from the sun. Stay hydrated and take care of your skin with moisturizers and your daily routine skin care.  

Most Aestheticians recommend getting a touch-up at least once every year and it does depend on your skin on how often you can get a touch up. Talk with your local aesthetician on how often you can receive your touch ups and any other possible recommendations to take care of your brows.
